Continuing our study of the subject of molecular biology of the cell, the third property of cells is the following, according to Karp:
Cells, like the organisms they make up, are formed as a result of reproduction. Cellular reproduction involves division of a mother cell into two daughter cells, wherein the contents of the mother cell are distributed to the daughter cells. Before the start of cell division, genetic material from the mother cell is duplicated, allowing each daughter cell to receive a complete and equal amount of genetic information. Most of the time, the volume of the two daughter cells is approximately the same. However, one of the daughter cells sometimes retains almost all of the cytoplasm, despite having received just half of the genetic material, such as in the case of a human oocyte undergoing division (Karp 2013).
