A good comparison to cells in terms of processes carried out, is to a chemical plant, only on a very small scale. Even the simplest of cells is able to perform hundreds of different chemical transformations, including a simple bacterial cell. Enzymes are required, however, for chemical changes to take place within cells. Enzymes are molecules that function as catalysts within a chemical reaction. In other words, they accelerate the reaction, allowing it to take place at noticeably faster speeds than it would have without an enzyme. A cell’s metabolism is the total summation of all of a cell’s chemical reactions (Karp 2013).
